Cookie Policy
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies whisperer.cc uses, why we use them, and how you can control them. We comply with the EU GDPR and ePrivacy Directive requirements for obtaining consent before placing non-essential cookies.
1. What is a cookie?
A cookie is a tiny text file that a website saves in your browser when you visit. Think of it as a sticky note the site leaves on your device — for example, to remember that you prefer the dark theme or that you are already logged in.
Cookies are not programmes. They cannot run code, install software, or read files on your computer. They contain only text that the website itself wrote there.
Every cookie has four key properties:
- Name — an identifier so the site knows what the value means (e.g.
wh.theme). - Value — the data being stored (e.g.
darkfor the chosen theme). - Expiry — how long the cookie lives. Session cookies are erased when you close the tab. Persistent cookies remain until their expiry date or until you delete them manually.
- Domain — which website may read it. A cookie set by whisperer.cc cannot be read by any other site.
2. localStorage and sessionStorage
Browsers also provide two similar storage areas that, unlike cookies, are never sent to the server automatically — they exist only on your device:
- localStorage — persists until you clear your browser data or the site removes it. We use it for your theme and language preferences.
- sessionStorage — erased when you close the browser tab. Not currently used by Whisperer.
In this policy we use "cookies" as a collective term for all three technologies, since their privacy implications are similar.
3. First-party vs third-party cookies
First-party cookies are set by whisperer.cc itself. They are essential for the site to work and for remembering your choices.
Third-party cookies are set by external services embedded in the page. Whisperer uses Yandex Metrika for traffic analytics — it only places cookies after you give explicit consent.
4. Cookies We Use
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
wh.theme | Necessary | Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode, so the page looks right on every visit | Persistent (localStorage) |
wh.lang | Necessary | Remembers the interface language you selected | Persistent (localStorage) |
| Session token (JWT) | Necessary | Keeps you signed in to the dashboard — without it you would need to log in on every page load | Until logout |
wh.cookie | Necessary | Stores your cookie consent choices so the banner is not shown on every visit | Persistent (localStorage) |
_ym_uid, _ym_d | Analytics | Yandex Metrika visitor identifier — lets us count unique visitors and see how people navigate the site. Activated only with your consent. | 1 year |
_ym_isad | Analytics | Yandex Metrika flag that detects whether an ad blocker is active — used only in aggregate statistics. Activated only with your consent. | 1 day |
5. Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential for the website and dashboard to work. Without them, core features like staying logged in or remembering your language preference would not function. Because they are strictly necessary to provide the service you requested, they do not require your consent and cannot be turned off via our widget.
You can still block them through your browser settings, but doing so will cause parts of the site to stop working correctly.
6. Analytics Cookies
We use Yandex Metrika to understand how visitors use the site — which pages are popular, where people drop off, and so on. This helps us improve the product. The data is aggregated and anonymised — no individual is identified.
Analytics cookies are strictly opt-in: the Yandex Metrika script does not load at all until you click "Accept all" or enable analytics cookies in the settings panel. If you choose "Reject", no analytics code ever runs in your browser during that visit or any future one.
7. Marketing Cookies
Marketing cookies (used for targeted advertising) are not currently used on this site. This section will be updated before any such cookies are introduced.
8. Managing Your Preferences
You have full control:
- Cookie banner — shown on your first visit. Choose "Accept all", "Reject", or "Manage" to set granular preferences.
- Footer link — click "Cookies" in the page footer at any time to reopen the settings panel and change your choices.
- Browser settings — you can block, delete, or restrict cookies directly in your browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari.
Note: blocking necessary cookies (session token, preferences) will prevent you from staying logged in and may break other features.
9. Policy Updates
If we make material changes — for example, adding a new analytics tool — we will update the date in the header and notify registered users by email before the changes take effect.
